CHINA –A Fast-Growing Economy (thanks to International Express,
Oxford University Press)
Since the 1980s, when China introduced a market economy and opened
its doors to the West, foreign companies have been competing to get a share
of this huge potential market of 1.2 billion people, equivalent to one-fifth of
the world’s population. In the early 80s, China imported a wide range of goods
and set up joint venture projects to build western-style hotels for the everincreasing number of foreign
visitors. Since the beginning of the 1990s, China
has followed a policy of reducing imports, improving infrastructure, and modernizing industry. Every
year China needs to construct hundreds of kilometres
of roads and railways, build new power stations to supply energy, and connect
another ten million people to the telephone system. Projects such as these offer huge
investment opportunities for foreign companies interested in setting up joint ventures with the
Chinese.
