PHILEAS FOGG

CLUB
October 2, 1872. Phileas Fogg lives in a comfortable house in London. Fogg
doesn't talk much. People know very little about him, except that he is a refined
gentleman. He doesn't work at all but apparently he is very rich. Nobody knows
where his money comes from. He lives alone and has only one servant.
Fogg's activities follow the same routine everyday at fixed hours and he's never
late. He spends most of his time at the exclusive Reform Club. He always has
lunch and dinner in the same room, at the same table. He reads the newspapers
after lunch, and after dinner he plays cards with his usual partners. At midnight,
he returns home and goes to bed.
Today Mr. Fogg fired his servant for bringing him shaving water at 84°
Fahrenheit instead of 86°. Now he is waiting for a new candidate for the job. Then
he hears a knock at the door. It's Passepartout, a Frenchman about 30 years old.
"Your name is John and you are French ..." Fogg greets him.
"Jean, monsieur... Jean Passepartout," he answers.
"Tell me about your work," says Fogg.
"I can do many different jobs and I am an honest man. Firstly, I worked as a
singer, later I was a circus performer, then an instructor of gymnastics and lastly,
a fireman. After that, I came to England to be a servant. I wasn't happy in my
other job, so here I am."
"I have good references about you. Do you know my conditions?" asks Fogg.
"Oui, monsieur..."
"That's fine! What time is it?"
"It's 11:22 a.m.," Passepartout answers.
"You're 4 minutes late. Never mind, you can start right now," says Fogg.
Then Fogg leaves for the Reform Club. It is exactly 11:30 a.m.

Reescrevi o primeiro parágrafo no simple past. Para fazer isso basta alterar os verbos que estão no simple present para o simple past, tendo atenção aos verbos irregulares. ps: Esse livro é muito bom, já li em português "A volta ao mundo em 80 dias"
