Can energy exist in different forms?
Yes, one kind of energy can be turned into another kind. When you have
run a race, for example, you may feel that you have used up all your
energy. But your energy has not been lost, it has changed into movement
and heat. Where does most of the energy used today come from? It comes from
fossil fuels: oil, coal and gas. The energy from fossil fuels came from the
sun millions of years ago and it was stored in the cells of the plants that
died. These energy resources are exhaustible. As these resources are not
renewable, they are getting very rare today. That is why the price of
fossil fuels is going up. Not only are these forms of fuel very expensive ,
they also cause a lot of pollution.
What is hydroelectricity?
It is electricity generated from the energy of running water (waterfalls and
rivers). The water(from a reservoir held behind a dam) drives a turbine
which powers a generator. When there is a long drought, rivers ,
waterfalls and reservoirs may dry up. Where will energy then come from?
To avoid shortages of energies, we are paying more attention to
alternative sources of energy such as the sun, the wind, the tides and
waves of the ocean, all of which are renewable.
