Christopher Columbus (Génova, between August 22 and October 31, 1451 - Valladolid, May 20, 1506) was an Italian navigator and explorer, responsible for leading the fleet that reached the American continent on October 12, 1492, under the orders of the Catholic Kings of Spain, in the so-called discovery of America. He embarked on his journey across the Atlantic Ocean with the aim of reaching India, having actually discovered the Caribbean islands (West Indies) and, later, the Gulf of Mexico coast in Central America.
Its name in Italian is Cristoforo Colombo, in Latin Christophorus Columbus and in Spanish, Cristóbal Colón. This anthroponym inspired the name of at least one country, Colombia [2] and two regions of North America: British Columbia in Canada and the District of Columbia in the United States. However, Pope Alexander VI writing in Latin always called the navigator by the name of Christophorum Colon with the meaning of Member and never by the Latin Columbus with the meaning of Pigeon.
