Bill Maher is wrong in his assertion that harmonious coexistence can be achieved through ignoring offense. Words have meaning, and with meaning they have the potential to harm.
The words people use reflect the attitudes and sentiments of those using them. When someone speaks offensively, it usually means that person is insensitive. Moreover, it suggests that the person doesn’t understand the circumstances of the people offended.
Mr. Maher asks us to coexist. However, it’s through calling attention to the offense with its ensuing debate that we all come to understand one another better and thus better coexist.
