Urban culture – hip hop
In Northern China, it is common for people to perform traditional Yangge dance in parks or squares. In Southern China, however, a less traditional dance is becoming popular. It is known as “hip hop”, and it is the latest craze in Hong Kong. Hip hop began in the United States, when gangs started battling each other by dancing instead of fighting. These gangs, mainly from New York, were called ‘B-Boys’, which was short for ‘break boys’, and their dancing, which they performed to hip hop music, became known as ‘breakdancing’. Hip hop music arrived in Hong Kong in the 1980’s, but it was not until the late 1990’s that hip hop culture really began to take off. Since 2000 breakdancing has become more and more popular, and now many people wear hip hop clothing, such as large T-shirts and baggy trousers. There are lots of traditional breakdancing moves. For example, there is the ‘turtle’ (the dancer balances on his or her hands and moves around in a circle). Also, there is the ‘worm’ (the dancer lies on the ground and rolls his or her body forward like a wave). There is also the ‘helicopter’ (the dancer spins on his or her head), and the ‘windmill’ (the dancer spreads his or her legs wide apart and spins around on his or her body). However, there are no fixed rules to breakdancing, so you can make up your own moves or customize traditional moves. Many of the moves are very difficult, so you must practice frequently to get them right. As you need to be quite strong to do the moves, some people think girls cannot breakdance. However, in South Korea, there are over two hundred ‘B-Girls’!
