Tobias and Carolina live in a beautiful town. There are nice people living in the neighborhood. They are very friendly. Bernardo and Milena are our friends. They Love their town.

There are many interesting places in our hometown. There is the Main Street where you can see a restaurant, a snack bar, a movie theater, an ice-rink and some shops. There is also an open market where we can buy fruit and vegetables. Our house is very comfortable. It is a simple house. There is a living-room, a dining-room, three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen and a garage. There is also a beautiful garden in front of the house.

UNUSUAL PEOPLE UNUSUAL JOBS


Steve and Stella Baker live in California. They’ve got two small children, and they are an average American family, except for one thing: she goes to work, he stays at home and looks after the children. Our reporter spoke to Steve and Stella at their home in San Diego:


“My wife has a very good job. She’s an electronics engineer, and she works for the US Navy here. So she works, and I stay at home and look after the children.”


Jim Macartney is a helicopter pilot. He’s British, but he lives and works in Africa. 

“I work for the hospital here. I take a doctor and two nurses in my helicopter to the jungle. There are no roads in the jungle . only rivers. People go by helicopter or by boat, or they walk.”


Mrs. Betty Brown is sixty-two. She’s a housewife, and a grandmother and a student! Mrs. Brown lives in Oxford, England, and goes to the University there. She studies Japanese, and she is the first in her class. We asked Mrs. Brown how she learns Japanese.

“My son lives in Japan, he teaches English in Tokyo and sends me Japanese magazines and newspapers, videos of Japanese TV programmes and cassettes of Japanese radio programmes.”

O texto apresentado não é necessário interpretar, pois se trata de um exercício de compreensão apenas, tendo em vista que apenas é apresentado fragmentos e palavras para realizar a tarefa. Porém, caso haja a necessidade da tradução do texto, seguem algumas estratégias de leitura e tradução.

Ao traduzir um texto, além de uma ferramenta para auxiliar em palavras ou expressões desconhecidas, pode ser um tradutor online ou dicionário, deve-se considerar os seguintes fatores também:

• Utilização de "Scanning" e "Skimming": são ferramentas, estratégias de leitura. Com elas podemos ler rápida e superficialmente um texto, para se obter mais rapidamente uma informação. Podem ser aplicadas em vários tipos de textos, como revistas, website, jornal.

"Scanning": com essa técnica fazemos uma leitura mais ampla, como se fosse uma "varredura", "escaneio" do texto. Através do scanning é possível então, obter informações detalhas relevantes, codificar mensagens de frases.

"Skimming": aqui, a estratégia é ler o texto mais rápido. Porém, o que deve ter foco é no layout do texto, título, subtítulo, cognatos, falsos cognatos, início e fim de cada parágrafo, imagens, gráficos (caso houver), números, nomes.

• Se o texto for traduzido por um tradutor eletrônico, atentar-se à formação das frases, verificar o sentido que elas estão sendo empregadas, para não ficar sem sentido.

Vamos à explicação de cada questão:

1 - Aqui, o plural de people fica igualmente dessa forma, pois já é plural de person (pessoa), não sendo necessário o acréscimo de "s".

2 - Apenas "Man" tem plural irregular. Assim como os seguintes:

• child (criança) - children
• woman (mulher) - women (é o mesmo raciocínio de men)

3 - "Neighborhood" é derivada de "neighbor" (vizinho), portanto a tradução também se deriva, assim sendo "vizinhança".

Questões 4 e 5: o uso do "will", juntamente a um verbo principal, indica que este verbo estará no futuro.
