Questão 7
How and when was English formed?
There is and old cliché in linguistics that a language is a dialect with an army and a navy behind it. This isn't just a gag. Defining when a new language is born is harder than say when a caterpillar becomes a butterfly. In the process by which a dialect becomes a language there is no easy empirical equivalent of the point when the butterfly emerges from the larva able to take off. So no linguist can look back and say: “That's it, Wednesday 5 may 1213, that's when the English language finally got wings.”
Norman Roberts, professor of linguistics in Hawaii University, says: “A language is such a complex structure it can't come into being at once. New languages develop out of older ones but it isn't easy to say, when the new and the old are so different, when a new language is born.”
Benji Wald, an expert in linguistics at the University of California, says: “It's difficult to say when English was born but before it there was another language, the language from which Dutch and German come. The English we speak today is so different from old English we could call it a different language, but we don't. We just call it a newer form of English.”
Although English belongs to the Germanic language family, it has become a strange cocktail with words imported from the country's invaders and, today, from this country's largest ex-colony. Celts, Romans, Anglo-Saxons, Danes and Normans all made their mark.
