An Inconvenient Truth

Kate Brand: What made you feel like now was the right time to make the sequel, roughly a decade on, after An Inconvenient Truth?

Al Gore: There have been two huge changes in the last decade. Number one, the climate-related extreme weather events are for more common, far more destructive, unfortunately. In the last seven years, The U.S has had 11 so-called once- in-a-thousand-years events. The second big change is that we now have solutions available that were only visible on the horizon a decade ago. Now, the cost of renewable energy from solar and wind is frequently well below the cost of electricity from fossil fuels. And soon, that's going to be true everywhere.

Kate Brand: What's the one technology development from the last decade that you're the most excited about, that you think could have the most impact on climate change?

Al Gore: Well, I've been most gratified, personally, by the stunning decreases in the price of electricity from solar photovoltaics, it’s almost as steep a cost-down curve as the computer chip revolution, certainly comparable to what’s happened with cell phones over the last few decades. It’s really quite remarkable. But if I had to pick one that's racing forward right now, it would be batteries. Because the addition of affordable and hyper efficient batteries to renewable energy generation, that combination is going to completely transform the world's energy system.
