The lady and
the gorillas
Dian Fossey was born in San Francisco, California, in 1932.
Her interest in animals started very early, when she was a child.
In 1963, after a trip to Africa, where she met the famous
anthropologist Dr. Louis Leakey, she became interested in
mountain gorillas.
Dian began observing gorillas in Zaire, now the Democratic
Republic of Congo, in 1967. Soon she moved to Rwanda,
where she started the Karisoke Research Center.
A funny story
People say that one day a
photographer wanted to take
a picture of Dian with the
gorillas.
So, he accompanied her
on a field trip.
"This isn't dangerous, is it?",
he said to her.
Some minutes later he added,
"You are going too close,
aren't you?"
And, when one of the
gorillas touched her
hand, the photographer
ran away shouting in
panic, "She's crazyl
She's crazy!"
She was the first person to have voluntary contact
with gorillas.
She could earn their trust, sit
among them, and play with them.
In
Rwanda she became very attached to a
particular young gorilla that she named
Digit.
One day, Digit was killed by poachers.
Dian was so angry that she started a
campaign against the killing of gorillas.
With the help of many people she
established the Digit Fund.
The Fund helps
researchers in Rwanda to protect the gorilla
population even today.
Dian lived among the gorillas for almost 18 years
and dedicated her life to saving them.
We now
know much more about gorilla's behavior as a
result of her work.
On December 26, 1985, Dian Fossey was found
raurdered in her cabin.
Her death is still unsolved.​
