1          Men not only cry less frequently than women, they also do it somewhat differently.
2          According to a study of more than 300 hundred adults recently published in Integrative Psychiatry, men cry about once a month; women five times as often. Men's tears commonly come to their eyes but don't spill over; women's tears flow more freely. Men don't often have the lump-in-the-throat feeling that many women experience. And men are more likely to claim that they can voluntarily stop themselves from crying.
3          Biochemist William Frey, of the St. Paul-Ramsey Medical Center in Minnesota and leader of the study, says that one reason men cry less may be that they suppress their tears even when they want to cry. He also theorizes that crying releases certain as-yet-undefined chemicals that build up in the body during stress. Thus, by holding back their tears, men may be adversely affecting their health. Men are known to have a higher incidence of stress illnesses, such as ulcers.
4          Even though the link between tears and illness is not firmly established, says Frey, "it might not be wise to suppress our natural crying response".
