Who has never dreamed of being famous? It's a wish we have since childhood. Media culture makes us want to be famous or to follow famous people as a hobby. But what does it mean to be famous? Celebrities are known and admired for their personal and/or professional success, financial condition etc., but there is a big difference between being known and being famous.

Not all known people have become celebrities, perhaps because they did not use mass media to properly publicize their image.

Unlike the fame gained by the great acts and exploits of the heroes of the past, being a celebrity does not last forever, because it depends on the media to exist. Creating a personal brand and investing heavily in advertising are tools with which people outside the entertainment industry can gain recognition.

Celebrities are a target of public interest, because of their personal lives, their consumption patterns, hobbies and of course behaviours. The industry profits from this curiosity about the lives of celebrities, turning all information into news, which is not always interesting.

We can not imagine popular culture without celebrities or celebrities without popular culture. Celebrities often compete and even overcome more traditional forms of entertainment like films, books and television programs, with the goal of distracting us.
