1) Observe que abaixo temos verbos que terminam em consoante, quando for assim, basta acrescentar ING sem problema algum, veja os exemplos:

· read vira reading (ler = lendo)
· sleep vira sleeping (dormir = dormindo)
· walk vira walking (caminhar = caminhando)
· cook vira cooking (cozinhar = cozinhando)
· watch vira watching (assistir = assistindo)

Mas, temos ainda verbos que terminam de forma diferente, para isso, temos que lançar mão de algumas regrinhas.
2) Os verbos que terminam com a letra -e, perdem este -e para que o -ing seja acrescentado. Desta forma verbos como:
· take vira taking
· make vira making
· organize vira organizing
· write vira writing

3) Quando temos verbos monossílabos, que são tônicos por natureza, usamos a seqüência: consoante > vogal > consoante dobra-se a última consoante e acrescenta-se o –ing. Assim:
· set vira setting
· get vira getting
· stop vira stopping
4) Alguns verbos dissílabos como 'begin' e 'prefer', cuja sílaba tônica é a última - '-gin' e '-fer' - a última consoante deve ser dobrada ao receber -ing. Assim, 'begin' vira 'beginning' e 'prefer' vira 'preferring'.

5) Nossa última regra diz que verbos terminados em '-ie', como 'lie' e 'die', trocam o -ie por -y. Ou seja, 'lie' vira 'lying' e 'die' vira 'dying'.
