Denominamos false friend uma palavra que apresenta uma grafia similar a uma outra palavra, em nossa língua materna, mas cujo significado é totalmente diferente.

A partir do significado correto, em Inglês, de cada false friend, podemos preencher as lacunas das atividades.

Activity I:

Neste exercício I, temos um dos mais famosos pares de false friends (ou falsos cognatos): pretend/intend. "Pretend" não significa pretender. Pretender, em inglês, é "intend". "Pretend" significa fingir.

"Novel", por sua vez, não significa novela. "Novel" quer dizer romance (referente a literatura, não a relacionamentos amorosos).

"Preservative" não significa "preservativo". Significa conservante.

Por último, a palavra "magazine" não significa loja, que é "shop" ou "store". "Magazine" significa revista.

Preenchendo as lacunas, temos:

Activity II

O adjetivo "sensitive" não quer dizer que alguém é "sensitivo". "Sensitive" significa "sensível" ou "delicado(a)". Ao afirmar, em inglês, que alguém é sensible, não estamos afirmando que esta pessoa é sensível, mas que ele ou ela é "sensato(a)".

"Actually" não siginifica "atualmente". Significa "na verdade". E a palavra "Relatives", por sua vez, significa "familiares". Não podemos dizer que alguém que chora o tempo todo ("cries all the time") é "sensato" ou "prudente". O correto seria dizer "sensível" - para isso utilizaríamos "sensitive" no lugar do adjetivo "sensible".

Analisando, portanto, as alternativas, vemos que a frase da letra C - "He cries all the time. I think he's too sensible." é a única INCORRETA.

Activity III

O texto da Atividade III descreve o dia-a-dia de alguém no trabalho (Day at Work). As palavras em negrito são falso cognatos, que precisamos traduzir adequadamente.

De acordo com a descrição acima, portanto, a resposta correta é a alternativa D: compareci – abrangente – entrar em acordo – gravou – finalmente.

Activity IV

No texto a seguir, temos uma nova série de falsos cognatos em destaque:

"Office" não significa "ofício". Significa "escritório". O verbo "realize" não pode ser traduzido como "realizar-se", pois o significado correto é "perceber". "Retired" não significa "retirados". Significa, na verdade, "aposentado(a)".

Como foi exposto na Atividade I, "Pretend" não significa pretender, pois "pretender" em inglês, é "intend". "Pretend" significa fingir. "Cafeteria" refere-se ao refeitório. Não se trata, portanto de um "coffee shop", o lugar onde compramos/café conhecido, em português, como "cafeteria".
