Activity 1: Breaking Rock
Materials:
Safety goggles, newspaper, different sized rocks
Procedure:
1. Pick up the rocks. How do you think these rocks were formed?
2. We're going to try to break the rocks. Rocks breaking up another word for this is
weathering) usually happens over long periods of time. We are going to try to do it quickly. Put
on safety glasses and hit the larger rocks with the smaller rocks for 30 seconds. Be careful
of your fingers
Answer these question:
1. What did you see after breaking the rocks into pieces?
2. Look for size, shape, color, texture, of the rocks. Is it possible to find rock in soil?
3. How do you think rocks break?
