A STREET CAT NAMED BOB
(By Louise Johnson)
James Bowen was at a low point in his life
when a miracle happened that transformed him.
James was a homeless drug addict, living a very
poor existence, until he found an injured street cat
in need of his help. The special bond that formed
between James and his cat, Bob, gave both of
them a second chance.
34-years-old James moved to Australia
from the UK after his parents’ divorce. In1997 he
returned to the UK to become a musician, but he
had no success and became homeless. For the
next 10 years he slept on the streets or in hostels
for homeless people. He started to use heroin to
escape from his problems. Everything changed,
however, in 2007.
James was living in a shelter in north
London. He busked in Convent Garden during the
day to make some money and was on a
methadone programme to help him come off the
drugs. One evening he returned home to find a
beautiful – but sick - ginger cat taking refuge in his
block of flats. James thought the animal must
belong to another resident, but when it was still
there several days later, he took it in. There was
no form of identify on the cat. He didn’t belong to
any of James’ neighbours.
James hardly had enough money for
himself, but he decided to help. He took the animal
to a vet for treatment. Once the cat was better
James released it back on the streets, hoping it
would find its way home, but the cat had other
ideas. He followed James around and even
traveled on the bus with to his pitch in central
London, the place where he used to play his
music. James gave the cat a permanent home and
called him “Bob”.
Bob so enjoyed riding on a bus with James
that soon the two of them were a double act – Bob
enchanted the crowd while James played his
guitar. They form a duo. Bob’s presence was very
popular and made more money for James. Their
visibility increased still further when James started
to sell the street magazine The Big Issue. The duo
became a hit on YouTube, and tourists came from
around the world to see them. James managed to
overcome his drug addiction and credited his
success to Bob.
In 2012 James’ story became a best-selling
book – A Street Cat Named Bob. There has since
been a sequel and a children’s version of the
original book. A film has been mentioned. Critics
say that James is exploiting Bob, but James’ many
fans believe that the book helps to highlight the
problems facing homeless people, and that this is
an inspirational story that gives hope to us all. And
anyone who has ever owned a cat knows that they
are reluctant to do anything they don’t want to do!
