The story of the theater starts in 1881, when the provincial deputy Antonio Jose Fernandes Junior, presented the project for the construction of an opera house in masonry, in the city of Manaus. The proposal was approved by the Provincial Assembly of Amazonas which initiated the discussions about the construction of the building. Manaus was at the height of the rubber cycle and was packed by wealth from extraction of Amazon LaTeX, highly valued by European and American industries. The architectural design was chosen by the Portuguese Institute of engineering and architecture of Lisbon in 1883. However, because of the discussions about the land for construction and labour costs, was started in 1884 with the cornerstone. The work unfolded morosely and only during the Government of Eduardo Ribeiro building the building took momentum. Were brought architects, builders, painters and sculptors in Europe to get the job done. The internal decoration was the charge of the pernambucan decorator, Crispim do Amaral,bwith the exception of the Hall the most luxurious area of the building given to the Italian artist Domenico de Angelis.
