the + adjetivo + terminação " est "

long →  the  longest

large → the largest

new → the newest

nice → the nicest

Quando termina em vogal/ consoante , dobra a consoante antes de

acrescentar a terminação " est "

big →  the biggest            

fat → the fattest

sad → the saddest

Adjetivos de uma ou duas sílabas terminados em consoante e "-y"

o "y" transforma-se em "i" antes de juntar a terminação " - est "

happy → the happiest
