De acordo com os significados dos verbos da Língua Inglesa denominados Modal Verbs ou Verbos Modais, podemos preencher as lacunas da seguinte forma:

  • a) could
  • b) might
  • c) can
  • d) could
  • e) shouldn’t e cannot
  • f) can’t
  • g) could

Cada modal verb corresponde a um tempo verbal. Can significa poder no sentido de "conseguir". É um verbo utilizado para se referir a uma habilidade: "I can play the guitar" significa "Eu sei/tenho a habilidade de tocar violão".

O verbo COULD é utilizado para se referir ao passado, enquanto MAY significa poder no sentido de ter permissão. Já o verbo modal WOULD é utilizado para se referir a uma situação condicional.
