Os escravos era de grande interesse para a coroa portuguesa, pois o custo da mao de obra era de baixo valor, e com isso utilizavam-o para economia exportadora - explorando-os para a corta da madeira ( pau brasil ), agricultura e exploraçao dos metais preciosos.
