Info
Newspaper headlines, in authentic newspapers especially, have their own language.
First, headlines in English language newspapers are usually short and they thus tend to
leave out all the inessential words, such as articles and auxiliary verbs. Because of that,
headlines use short words wherever possible, rather than long ones. Sometimes, of course,
the very briefness of headlines makes them ambiguous and difficult for the English
language learners to understand.
Second, journalists use a variety of techniques in order to attract and keep the reader's
attention. Some of them are pun (play on words), alliteration or rhyme.
