Explicação:

A estrutura da 2nd Conditional é If + Simple Past + Would + Infinitive. Ela representa uma condição hipotética, algo que seria realidade no presente, se algo no passado tivesse acontecido. A sentença é dividida em duas partes:

1) "If + Simple Past" (Se + Pretérito Simples), que se refere à ação que ocorreria primeiro nesse cenário.

2) "Would + Infinitive", quese refere à ação que ocorreria depois, caso a outra sentença ocorresse.

Ex: You WOULD BE smarter, IF you GRADUATED from the university.  

     Você SERIA mais inteligente, SE você SE GRADUASSE da universidade.

Neste caso, "would be smarter" (Would + Infinitivo) é a ação que ocorreria posteriormente, caso a segunda frase "if you graduated" (If + Past Simple de "graduate") ocorresse.

Em caso de sentenças negativas:

1) "If + not + Simple Past"

2) "Would + not (wouldn't) + Infitivo"
