The inadequate disposal of solid urban waste is still a challenge to public environmental management policies in Brazil. Waste recycling appears as an economic, social and environmentally viable measure to try to reverse this situation. In this way, the article contributes so that the participation of each industry, the public sector and the collectors in the gains promoted by recycling is evaluated more consistently. This study was based on the physical volume of recyclable material from a sample of 33 waste picker cooperatives in the Metropolitan Region of Rio de Janeiro, as well as on input-product modeling to simulate the impacts of recycling on the Rio de Janeiro economy for the year 2008.The performance of the selected waste pickers' cooperatives resulted in a saving of resources of approximately R $ 34 million for the Rio de Janeiro economy.
