Café não se conta e nem comida, porque café é líquido e comida é porção. O que faz sentido aqui seria THE em ambas opções. A tradução não tem segredo. Ficaria estranho até em português: Um café está quente/Uma comida está fria. Obviamente, se você trocar o "um/uma" por "a", Vai fazer sentido. Eu estou convicto de que o seu professor ou sua professora errou nisso aí.
