Past Continuous

O passado continuo é o tempo verbal usado para indicar que uma ação que estava ocorrendo quando outra ação inesperada aconteceu. Normalmente aparece junto de outra frase no passado simples e essas duas frases são  unidas por conectivo que pode ser o "when" ou "while".

A primeira frase (Past continuous) é construída  pelo verbo to be no passado simples mais o verbo principal no gerúndio. Para a segunda frase (simple past) é utilizado o verbo principal no pasado simples.

Ex: Manuella was swimming when Giovanna jumped into the pool.

• Manuella was swimming → past continuous

• when → conectivo

• Giovanna jumped into the pool. → simple past

Assim podemos concluir que o passado continuo é utilizado para indicar ações que estavam ocorrendo quando outra ação ocorreu e interrompe a inicial.
