No estudo do discurso indireto em inglês, vemos que os tempos verbais são alterados para possibilitar o entendimento acerca da pessoa que profere. É normal também que o nome da pessoa seja citada, ou que lhe faça alguma referência.
Existem algumas regrinhas básicas para realizar a transformação de um discurso para a forma indireta:
- Quando o verbo está no presente simples, deve ir para o passado simples. (see -> saw)
- Afirmações sobre o futuro se tornam condicionais. (will -> would)
- O presente contínuo se torna passado contínuo.
- O presente perfeito se torna passado perfeito (have been-> had been)
- Ordens vão para o infinitivo.
