Path to perfection
Marta Vieira da Silva is the most successful female footballer in Brazil; the only female football player in Brazil to receive the award of Fifa’s Women’s Player of the year, in 2006.
She recently played in the Uefa Cup final for the Swedish Umea IK, and in the match against the Arsenal Ladies, she was absolutely outstanding, although her team lost.
(..)
Marta was born in Dois Riachos, a small arid town of about 13,000 people, in the Brazilian region or north east (Alagoas). Marta’s father worked as a barber but he left her mother when the player was just a baby. She has two elder brother ad a sister.
Marta didn’t have money to buy a ball. So she improvised, by folding plastic bags in paper.
(…)
She began to play football in the streets with local boys. As in many other places in the world, the boys and the men in Dois Riachos thought that football (or soccer) was a game for men.
(…)
Atualização 2:
When she was a teenager, Marta joined a five-a-side indoor team, but once again was the only girl in the tournament. ‘I played in the championship for two years. Then, one day, another team said that they would not compete with a girl. So I had to withdraw from the tournament.”
(…)
When she was 14, something unexpected happened in her life and this was the major breakthrough
The manager of a local sports club was going to Rio de Janeiro and asked her if she wanted to join him and try to enter Fluminense or Vasco da Gama. She accepted and hopped into a bus to Rio. On the first day of trial at Vasco, she was taken on.
(…)
Marta is inevitably compared to Pelé, first because she was young and so talented like him; secondly because, life him, she was 17 when made her World Cup debut in 2003.
Like Pelé, Marta was the sensation of the champion ship.
