There is x There are

Simple Present

As formas there is e there are são usadas para expressar o mesmo sentido  dos verbos haver ou existir em português.

A diferença entre there is e there are:

There is => singular, usado para apenas uma pessoa, animal ou objeto.

There are => plural, usado para mais de uma pessoa, animal ou objeto.

Simple Past

Forma Afirmativa

Exemplos:

There was a book on the table. (Havia um livro em cima da mesa.)

There were two dogs in that house. (Havia dois cachorros naquela casa.)

Forma Negativa

Exemplos:

There was not a book on the table.

There were not two dogs in that house.

(Não havia dois cachorros naquela casa.)

Contrações:

was not => wasn't

were not => weren't.

As frases mantêm os mesmos significados.

Exemplos:

There wasn't a book on the table.

There weren't two dogs in that house.

(Não havia dois cachorros naquela casa.)

Forma Interrogativa

there was se torna was there; e

there were se torna were there.

Exemplos:

Was there a book on the table? (Havia um livro em cima da mesa?)

Were there two dogs in that house? (Havia dois cachorros naquela casa?)
