O Dia de Ação de Graças - Thanksgiving Day

É o feriado nacional mais importante nos Estados Unidos e é celebrado na quarta quinta-feira do mês de novembro, enquanto no Canadá é na segunda segunda-feira de outubro.  

Nesse dia, as famílias costumam viajar para se reunirem e agradecerem a todas as bençãos e bons acontecimentos do ano. É uma celebração tipicamente familiar. O jantar tem início por volta das 18 hs, após os homens da família assistirem ao futebol e a família assistir ao desfile da ''Macys'', muito típico nesse dia.

O jantar começa com orações e o prato principal é o ''turkey'', que significa peru. Há também tortas de nozes pecãs e maçã, purê de batatas e molho de cranberry.

O Thanksgiving Day, por ser uma data que celebra a colheita do ano, não é comemorado no Brasil porque o calendário da colheita é totalmente diferente.

Today, Harvest Festival or Thanksgiving is celebrated every year, but just as is the case with Christmas and Easter, few people in the West Hemisphere are aware of the true meaning  of this custom.

In a time when many people just go to the supermarket  and buy whatever takes their fancy, it is not surprising that people don't seem to be aware of how much time and effort it takes to grow plants from seed to the fruits, vegetables, and cereals they buy, because nowadays all of these are available all year around.

However our ancestors knew what they were thankful for, which is why some forms of celebration have been held for millennia.  At first, people made sacrifices to various gods and goddesses, often in the form of an animal which was killed for the purpose, or by leaving or even burning fruits, vegetables or cereals.
