Making street art in Cape Town

Graffiti don Falko One is standing on the grass in the middle of Bhunga Square in Langa, Cape Town’s oldest township.

The walls of the shacks, outdoor toilets and self-built homes that line the circular street are being covered with spray can murals and portraits by the stream of artists who’ve been joining him daily for the last week.

The art project is part of [...] Amaphiko. It’s a new initiative to give wings to social entrepreneurs, and includes a 10-day academy. Last year it took place in Soweto, this year it’s in Langa and next month it’s taking flight to Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Artists from all over the world are working on the project. Brazilian art activist Mundano is layering paint onto a cactus that’s taking shape on a wall at the end of the street, and a bunch of Falko’s trademark elephants are scattered all around the scene, turning dilapidated walls into works of art.
