Explicação:

Algumas frases tem "while" que significa 'enquanto', após este advérbios usamos o tempo 'contínuo'. por exemplo,

Eu perdi minha bolsa ENQUANTO ESTAVA CAMINHANDO.

Quando a oração não tem while, o verbo estará no passado simples.

ORAÇÃO 1 : ALGUÉM PEGOU (minha bolsa)  Somebody took it.

ORAÇÃO 2: ENQUANTO EU NÃO ESTAVA OLHANDO    While I wasn't looking.
