Imagine being able to control your thoughts. This can be a difficult task these days. People are constantly involved in problems, whether at home or at work. A mind never stops thinking, analyzing and trying to understand what is going on around it. Faced with this stress, meditation is increasingly falling into popular taste. Taking advantage of this need, medicine rescued ancient meditative techniques and created mindfulness; or mindfulness.

Roughly speaking, mindfulness is a type of meditation proven in scientific studies. It came from an ancient meditation called Vipassana, which, it is believed, was elaborated by the Buddha himself more than 2,000 years ago. Vipassana is seen as a religious orientation. Mindfulness is seen as a scientific method by modern medicine.

Vipassana was adapted by medicine thanks to the work of Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn, from the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, in the 1970s. Kabat-Zinn studied Zen Buddhism and integrated Buddhist knowledge and yoga practices with Western medical science. He founded Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) to help people live better with stress, pain or illness.

Mindfulness is a practice that consists in paying attention to what happens in the moment, both in the mind, in the body and in the environment. Here in Brazil, it is also known for mindfulness, for bringing awareness about thoughts, feelings and behavior patterns, leading people to have options to choose from, better responses to life's challenges and prioritizing well-being.

Marcelo Demarzo, a doctor specialized in mindfulness, explains that, although it has to do with meditation, mindfulness, by reducing stress, helps people to treat themselves in a hospital environment, for example.

He adds that in cases of anxiety, depression and even cancer, there is a significant positive response to treatment. ; For the past 20 years, mindfulness has been popularized in Europe and the United States. In Brazil, it began to be disseminated 15 years ago by the physicist and ordained Buddhist Stephen Little ;, he says.

Mindfulness, he says, is third generation psychotherapy, with an important scientific basis, based on oriental meditative practices adapted to a secular and universal setting, without any specific religious orientation.

Techniques

According to studies, 47% of all thoughts are disordered in the mind. Marcelo explains that mindfulness uses meditative techniques taught in courses based on the work of Jon Kabat-Zinn. There are eight meetings lasting a maximum of two hours each, to exercise and deal with stress.

With the programs in this course, mindfulness trains meditative techniques with patients so that they understand and seek to incorporate them into their daily lives. Marcelo is also the coordinator of Mente Aberta; Brazilian Center for Mindfulness and Health Promotion at the Federal University of São Paulo (Unifesp).

The specialist ensures that the results in medical treatments with mindfulness reach 30% to 40% success, on average. In cases of depression, the returns of the dreaded depressive crises fall by 50%. In addition, the patient will know how to deal better with the returns, both from depression and anxiety attacks. In chronic pain, he will learn to live with the problem in the best way.

In addition to being a support for medical treatments, mindfulness helps in other aspects of life. ; Improves memory, concentration and socio-emotional skills ;, guarantees the doctor. Another point highlighted by Marcelo is that the corporate world is also interested in the practice. ; People are able to have better interpersonal relationships within companies. It has to do with better performance: in management and leadership .;

What is

Mindfulness preaches awareness about feelings, thoughts and sensations. Those who practice it believe that remaining an observer of their own conscience allows them to understand feelings more, resulting in serenity and wisdom. With practice, you understand anger and stress within you, and with observation of your own state of mind, it dissolves; that emotion and the negative charge that it would bring to the physical and emotional. Mindfulness teaches that consciously reflecting on an issue makes it less uncomfortable.
